Skin After 40: What Actually Changes — And What You Can Genuinely Do About It

There's no shortage of advice about ageing skin. Most of it is either alarmist, oversimplified, or quietly trying to sell you something. Here's what's actually happening — and what genuinely makes a difference.

Somewhere in your forties, skin starts to behave differently. Not dramatically, not overnight — but noticeably. The products that worked in your thirties feel less effective. Skin that used to recover quickly seems slower to bounce back. Fine lines that once disappeared with a good night's sleep start to linger.

This isn't inevitable decline. It's biology — specific, well-understood changes in how your skin functions. And understanding them is the first step to responding intelligently rather than reactively.

What actually changes in skin after 40

Several things shift simultaneously, which is part of why the change feels noticeable even when each individual change is gradual.

Collagen production slows. From your mid-twenties, collagen — the protein responsible for skin's firmness and structure — declines at roughly 1% per year. By your forties, that cumulative loss becomes visible as skin begins to lose its former plumpness and resilience.

Cell turnover slows down. Younger skin renews itself approximately every 28 days. By your forties, that cycle can extend to 45-60 days. The result is a build-up of older, duller cells at the surface — which is why skin can look less radiant and feel rougher in texture.

Oestrogen levels begin to decline. This affects skin significantly — oestrogen plays a key role in maintaining skin thickness, moisture retention, and collagen synthesis. As levels drop, skin can become drier, thinner, and more prone to sensitivity.

The skin barrier becomes less efficient. A well-functioning barrier keeps moisture in and irritants out. With age, the lipid layer that forms this barrier gradually thins, making skin more prone to dehydration and reactive to products it previously tolerated well.

What this means for how you care for your skin

The changes above point clearly to what your skincare routine needs to address — not in a complicated, 12-step way, but in terms of focus.

What skin after 40 genuinely needs

Support for collagen. Ingredients that stimulate collagen synthesis — Vitamin C, retinoids, and peptides — become more relevant, not less, as production naturally slows.

Accelerated cell renewal. Gentle exfoliation and ingredients that encourage cell turnover can help counteract the slower renewal cycle, improving radiance and texture over time.

Barrier support. Niacinamide, ceramides, and quality plant oils help maintain and repair the skin barrier — reducing sensitivity and improving how skin holds onto moisture.

Consistent, meaningful hydration. Not just surface moisture, but formulations that genuinely support the skin's ability to retain water throughout the day.

What doesn't work — and why

More products is rarely the answer. Layering multiple active ingredients without understanding how they interact can compromise the barrier further and cause the sensitivity that many women in their forties wrongly assume is simply an inevitable part of ageing.

Similarly, very high concentrations of actives — particularly retinoids and exfoliating acids — can cause more disruption than benefit if the barrier isn't adequately supported. The goal is effective, not aggressive.

And no amount of skincare addresses what happens below the surface. Sleep, nutrition, hydration, and stress management all have a measurable impact on how skin looks and behaves — often more than any product applied to the surface.

A note on realistic expectations

Skincare can genuinely improve how skin looks and feels at any age. It can slow certain visible signs of ageing, improve texture and tone, and support long-term skin health in meaningful ways.

What it cannot do is reverse the biological process of ageing entirely — and any brand claiming otherwise is not being straight with you.

The goal, in our view, is not to look younger. It is to have skin that is healthy, comfortable, and genuinely well cared for — at every age.

At Intrinsic Skincare, we formulate with this in mind. Every product is designed to support skin health over the long term — not to deliver short-term surface results at the expense of the skin's integrity. Because how your skin behaves in ten years is just as important as how it looks today.
